VOCAL SCOREFAME SCORESONGWRITING SCORELIVE/PERFORMANCE SCORE
Talent – 8/10 – Elton John has a unique voice that sounds warm, emotional and expressive. He delivers emotion exceptionally well especially on ballads like “Your Song” and “Candle in the Wind.” However, he lacks the vocal range and power shown by Freddie Mercury and other prominent singers in the pop/rock genre.Peak Fame: 10/10 – He was one of the most globally recognizable artists in the 1970s and maintained high visibility throughout the years until today.
Innovation and Originality (9/10) – Elton John is highly original in his songwriting and very successful in merging glam rock, pop, soul, country, and piano ballads into a cohesive mainstream sound. But he is not a revolutionary songwriter in a way that altered the musical landscape. Charisma & energy (9.5/10) – believe it or not, Elton John has a cheeky humour despite being known for throwing tantrums! He is also known for his theatrical presence and flamboyant costumes on stage. More notably, Elton’s piano acrobatics is so electrifying it’s like watching a high-stakes sports competition.
Skill/Technique: 8/10 – Elton John is more like a charismatic showman rather than a professional vocalist. He’s not known for highly technical singing but always had good breath control and phrasing.
Legacy: 10/10 – Elton has been rocking the music industry for over 50 years. His influence across pop, rock, and musical theatre has influenced the world along with generations of artists like Ed Sheeran and Lady Gaga.Lyrics (N/A) – Elton John’s lyrics were mainly written by Bernie Taupin.
Audience engagement (9/10) – If Elton John didn’t make it as a musician, storytelling would 100% be his full time job instead. He is super talkative and always engages with his audience through storytelling about music and life. When it comes to performing, Elton John spends most of his time behind the piano which make fans feel like observers rather than active participants. However, he does use strong facial expressions, body language and always encourages fans to sing along (so it would be fair to judge him based on his different engagement style).
Power (8/10) – Elton has strong chest power and could belt with ease. It would be better if he had a wider vocal range because he could very well blow the stage away! Jokes aside – if Elton had the ability to belt higher, it would carry deeper emotion and expression in his singing. Unfortunately his vocal range limits his ability to do so.
Awards & Honors: 10/10 – 5 Grammys (plus a Grammy Legend Award), 2 Oscars, 1 Tony Award, 1 Golden Globe, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1994) and many more!Emotional Impact (10/10) – Songs have a wide range of emotional impact across different moods and styles. Deeply emotional vocals and piano playing on songs like “Your Song”, “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”, and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”.
Signature skills (10/10) – PIANO PIANO PIANO!!!
Range (7/10) – Elton has a moderate vocal range but not extreme compared to other vocalists as mentioned. In his pop/rock genre, he has sufficient range to deliver emotion effectively.
Global Reach: 10/10 – Sold over 300 million records worldwide, toured +80 countries, and widely known across generations.Melody: 10/10 – This is where Elton is virtually unmatched. His melodies are catchy, complex and extremely memorable. “Crocodile Rock” and “I’m Still Standing” are examples of up-beat melodies while “Sacrifice” is more flowy and deep.
Live vs Studio consistency (9.5/10) – During Elton John’s early years, his live vocals matched studio vocals very closely and he even improvised to make it even better. However, inconsistent pitch and vocal control are notable weaknesses. Elton’s voice has gotten deeper over the years especially after his throat surgery in mid 1980s but his live singing has remained strong even today.
